2012 Fort Wayne Trailblazers

The day was bright and sunny as Fort Wayne awoke to one of the biggest Fort Wayne Trails (FWT) events this year. The participants lined up, eyes ahead, waiting for the signal and then ... off they went! Some quickly took the lead, while others were content to set a slower pace as they all walked, jogged, or ran the Fort Wayne Trails course set for them.

What is this event you might ask? The FWT hosted the Blazer 5k/10k race on Sunday, October 21st, 2012 at 2 pm, starting and ending at Summit Middle School on Homestead Road. This fundraising race is part of Fort Wayne Trails Countdown to Connectivity Program where a $5 million grant is waiting to be unlocked. However, to unlock these funds Fort Wayne Trails must raise $1 million by the end of 2013. Essentially every $1 given to or raised by Fort Wayne Trails becomes $6.

The event was open to people of all ages and volunteers were posted at various points along the course, armed to the teeth with plenty of water for those running or jogging. The finish line was situated at Summit Middle School and prizes were given to the top male and female finishers in each age group and for the overall top three males and females. Multiple random prize drawings were also awarded various participants.

As the race wound down around 4 pm, the light slowly started to sink down towards the horizon, and a calm settled over Fort Wayne. With such a great turnout to support not only the trails but to support the community of Fort Wayne, it can be said that Fort Wayne is going to go far!
